Aboul-Qacem Echebbi werd geboren op 24 februari 1909 te Tozeur als zoon van een plaatselijk rechter. In 1930 behaalde hijzelf ook zijn rechtendiploma aan de universiteit van Ez-Zitouna.
Hij was zeer geïnteresseerd in moderne literatuur en vertaalde romantische en oud Arabische werken. Zijn poëtische talent manifesteerde zich al op jonge leeftijd en schreef over veel verschillende onderwerpen, van de schoonheid der natuur tot patriottisme. Zijn gedichten verschenen in de meest prestigieuze Tunesische en Arabische kranten. Zijn gedicht "Aan de Tirannen van deze wereld", was veelvuldig te horen tijdens de demonstraties te Tunesië en Egypte in de opstanden van 2011.

Echebbi overleed op 9 oktober 1934 te Tunis na een lange geschiedenis van hartproblemen.
Naast het eerder genoemde gedicht is Echebbi's naam tevens gevestigd door de laatste twee coupletten die hij schreef voor het huidige volkslied van Tunesië.
